East Asian Games Open with a More Cost Consious Approach

images9With more than 8,000 spectators, the sixth East Asian Games open with a spectacular but scaled down ceremony in Tianjin which highlighted a much cost conscious approach to sporting events. Representatives and their athletes cheered on as they witness the launch of the quadrennial sports feast in East Asia before it will undergo an overhaul.

The organizing committee pledged to hold a cost efficient event and even suspended some procedures such as the torch relay and flame lighting. Since 1993 the East Asian games is one of the important regional event for delegations from the eight East Asian countries and regions of the Olympic Council of Asia. In this year’s event there will be more than 2,000 athletes competing in 24 events until October 15.

Officials of the organizing committee said that they scaled down several events and only kept necessary procedures and performances for the opening ceremony along with changing of the venue to a gymnasium with a smaller capacity. The budget was also cut down by one fifth compared to the last East Asian Games in Hong Kong which cost 240 million yuan.

This will also be the last time the sporting event will be presented in it format as the council of the East Asian Games have passed a proposal during the regional youth sports meeting that future events will be held for young athletes from 14 to 18 years of age.
